The Importance of Vulnerability and Humility

According to Bryan, the foundation of success in the construction business lies in the ability to be vulnerable and humble. He emphasizes that construction business owners should not feel the need to have all the answers or be the smartest person in the room. Instead, they should embrace their limitations and be willing to learn from their mistakes.

"I think success in business comes down to really being vulnerable and humble. And understanding that you're not expected to know everything."

Mastering the Art of Communication

One of the key factors that separates construction champions from the rest is their mastery of communication. Bryan believes that the majority of problems in the industry can be traced back to communication errors. He stresses the importance of empathizing with clients, understanding their perspectives, and guiding them through the process, even when you don't have all the answers.

"So much of the challenge, I think, in running a successful business comes down to communication, because I can really trace back every single problem back to a communication error."

Handling Mistakes with Integrity

Mistakes are inevitable in the construction industry, but how a business owner responds to them is what truly defines their character. Bryan emphasizes that it's not about being perfect, but rather about how you handle the situation when things go wrong.

"It's okay that you're wrong sometimes because you're human. But how do you respond to that is really what I think defines it."

Maintaining Emotional Control

Effective leaders in the construction industry understand the importance of controlling their emotions, even in the face of challenging situations. Bryan advises construction champions to leave their emotional baggage at the door and focus on the desired outcome when dealing with upset clients or team members.

"As the leader, we have to understand. These are emotions that feel. We have to work loads. We have to get to the root cause of all this, and we just can't come in and just completely throw their emotions out the window."

Investing in Mentorship and Career Development

To ensure that the brand and vision of the construction business are consistently executed, Bryan emphasizes the importance of implementing a structured mentorship program. This involves clearly defining the outcomes and job functions of each position within the company and providing a clear career roadmap for employees to follow.

"The career roadmap is just basically putting those all side by side and being able to actually show somebody what does the path look like?"

By embracing vulnerability, mastering communication, handling mistakes with integrity, maintaining emotional control, and investing in mentorship, construction business owners can position themselves as true champions in the industry. These principles not only lead to business success but also foster a positive and empowering work culture that can propel a construction company to new heights.
