Unlocking the Secrets of Construction Champions
In the latest episode of the Construction Champions Podcast, host Ron Nussbaum sits down with Dylan Milroy, one of the owners of Better Basements and Waterproofing. Their insightful conversation delves into the key attributes that define a true construction champion and the transformative power of surrounding yourself with the right people.
The Value of Continuous Improvement
Dylan emphasizes the importance of always seeking to better oneself, even if it means being the "stupidest person in the room." He shares how bringing on business coaches has been a game-changer, allowing him to bounce ideas off experienced mentors and avoid costly mistakes. This mindset of constant refinement and learning is crucial for construction professionals who aspire to reach new heights.
"I think it's super important to constantly, constantly be refining and looking to better yourself."
The Power of Branding and Reputation
Dylan strongly believes that construction businesses must treat their operations like any other industry, with a focus on branding, online presence, and customer service. He argues that contractors who lack a professional image and fail to prioritize their reputation are more likely to be perceived as subcontractors rather than trusted partners for homeowners.
"If you don't have an online reputation that you're trying to protect, then what is that customer's recourse?"
The Importance of Execution
Dylan stresses that execution is the key to success, not just gathering information. He encourages construction professionals to surround themselves with the right team and leverage their expertise to quickly implement strategies and measure the return on investment.
"If you're not in those mastermind groups and you're not able to execute super quickly, then you're not going to know what the ROI is until you act."
The Looming Consolidation in Construction
Drawing from his experience in the basement waterproofing industry, Dylan foresees a significant shift in the construction landscape, with large players consolidating the market and smaller, less adaptable companies being forced out. He believes that the next 5-10 years will see the emergence of 3-4 dominant players in each construction niche, leaving little room for the "guy in a truck" operations.
"I believe the next 5 to 10 years in the construction space is we're going to have 3 to 5 players in every market that are going to do a good job for a customer."
Embracing the Construction Champion Mindset
The insights shared by Dylan Milroy highlight the critical importance of adopting a construction champion mindset. By continuously seeking to improve, investing in professional development, and embracing the business side of construction, construction professionals can position themselves for long-term success in an increasingly competitive industry.
As the construction landscape evolves, those who are willing to adapt and innovate will emerge as the true champions, while those who resist change may find themselves left behind. The time is now to embrace the champion mindset and take your construction business to new heights.
